Backyard Port Orford Cedar Deck
A steep, unused mountain backyard became a multi-level deck built entirely from Port Orford cedar — a rot-resistant, tight-grained wood chosen to stand up to high-country weather and look better every year.
This build had to solve two problems at once: turn a sloped, rocky lot into level, usable outdoor space, and do it in a material worthy of the setting. We handled the full scope in-house — excavation and grading, a structural frame engineered for the slope, custom-laid cedar decking, stairs, and a dedicated pad for a hot tub.
Built from Port Orford cedar
Port Orford cedar is prized for its tight grain, natural rot resistance, and durability — a premium choice that rewards the extra care it takes to work with.

Carving a deck out of a slope
We began by excavating and grading the sloped yard, then anchored a new frame to the house to establish a level platform on uneven ground.

A level frame over uneven ground
The deck structure was framed and leveled to carry the finished decking, stairs, and the added load of a hot tub — all built to hold true through freeze-thaw seasons.
Laid board by board
The cedar decking went down piece by piece, cut and fitted on site for tight, clean lines across the whole deck.

Steps down to the yard
Matching cedar stairs connect the deck to the yard below, framed and finished to the same standard as the main platform.

A cedar deck built for the mountains
Stained and finished, the deck gives this mountain home a real outdoor living space — room to relax, a spot for the hot tub, and cedar that will only get richer with age.
